Virtual Place-triotic Flag Art Workshop
Thursday, November 17, 2022,
6pm - 7pm
Online via Zoom
FREE
The artist, scholar, and activist Andrea Monroe will lead a virtual workshop aimed at interpreting, interrogating, and repositioning the historical values of the American Flag.
Taking inspiration from her own history as a descendent of sharecroppers, this workshop invites attendees to reflect on the materiality of the flag and the cultural values that it has come to symbolize. It will facilitate a deep discussion about the means by which the country was founded and built – looking at who did the founding and who did the building and how a flag can symbolize seemingly disparate notions of land and identity within the cultivation of a region. This event will be moderated by MexiCali Biennial curator, Enid Baxter Ryce.
