Community Conversations Part 1: Communication as Care

Join art, wellness, and healing practitioners in a new online healing and wellness series connecting to our exhibition, Community is Collective Care.

Facilitated by MAH Outreach Coordinator, Helen Aldana, learn how the healing of yourself and others is an act of social justice. This series will be hosted on Zoom throughout March, April, and May. You're invited to join the conversation or sit back and listen as we dive deeper into the different themes, resources, and stories featured in Community is Collective Care.

For this week's Community Conversation (CoCo) we have partnered with UCSC Geek Week and UCSC Restorative Justice. We will be joined and guided by Vicki Duval and Alex Belisario as we discuss the impact on, and importance of, communication and community in a time of Covid-19.

During this virtual conversation, if you find comfort in crafting we'll be sharing how to make mask expanders for anyone who would like to join.

Materials needed:

  • Needle
  • Thread
  • 2 flat buttons
  • A square of cotton fabric at least 4 by 4 inches
  • Pencil

Meet Our Collaborators

Geek Week is a week-long series of events and programs centered around various aspects of Geekdom. Broadly defined, the objectives for Geek Week explores intersections of identity and interests across different genres, and disciplines. It aims to create an inclusive and respectful community among peers with common interests. With an appreciation for the diverse cultural origins that comprise Geekdom, Geek Week hopes participants discover potential new interests and resources to enrich their co-curricular experiences by participating in events and programs occurring on campus or in the local Santa Cruz community. The UCSC Restorative Justice Program offers students the opportunity to participate in an inclusive and effective dialogue process for addressing harm/conflict and building support within their community. The Restorative Justice process is voluntary and brings people together. Rather than a third party making a decision about the outcome, the actual parties involved in the situation make a decision together. The goal is to repair harm and make things right, for the individuals and the overall community.
